I imagine most people think Shinji is, literlly, a gay coward, in my opinion he's not a coward, well maybe in Episode 1 he is. As for the gay thing Kaworu was the first person who actually admitted that they liked him. If you watch carfully you'll notice that noone ever says they like him not even Misato. Shinji is the pilot of EVA-01 the creepiest of the Evangelions and if I assume right the soul of EVA-01 is Shinji's mother who died in 2004. Half the time shinji pilots EVA-01 it goes beserk and he becomes even more mentally unstable. He is shy and somewhat dislikes living with two weird women.
